Martin Speake alto saxophone
with pianist Barry Green
drummer Jeff Williams
bassist Sam Lasserson or Calum Gourlay
I have begun a new residency every Sunday afternoon at a
great venue which has one of the best pianos in London. By having a regular
weekly gig with mostly the same musicians (if available) I feel a real
'band sound' can develop. The music is drawn from material by Charlie
Parker, Ornette Coleman, Lennie Tristano, standard songs and my own tunes
and we can play acoustically without having amplification distorting the
natural sound of the music. It has a nice cafe upstairs called Hubbub
and this is open all day on Sundays.
Drummer Jeff Williams arrived from New York more than three
years ago and we had a mutual musical collaborator in Ethan Iverson the
pianist in the now famous The Bad Plus. I had recorded a duo cd of
ballads with Ethan and Jeff had played with him in a group with Bill McHenry
and Reid Anderson which recorded the cd Live at Smalls. I am very grateful
to Ethan to suggest Jeff contact me. Since I have met
Jeff I have had some great times playing with him and also socially, and
find him very perceptive and a master of the oneliner that cuts through
the confusion of life! Nobody else plays drums like him and I
hope he stays here in this country so we can deepen our playing together.
He has played and recorded with Stan Getz, Paul Bley, Lee Konitz, Dave
Liebman, Joe Lovano and many more. Pianist Barry Green I have known for
nearly ten years since he was a student at Guildhall and started showing
up at some gigs I was doing. He then came to me for a few lessons and
I quickly realised there wasn't much I could teach him. He has checked
out so much music already and has a great positive attitude. He knows
many tunes and plays great straight ahead and free! Barry is a member
of Ingrid Laubrock's group and plays with Bobby Wellins, Anita Wardell
and Christine Tobin. Sam Lasserson who recently finished studying at Trinity
College of Music
will be sharing the bass playing with Calum Gourlay who is in his final
year at the Royal Academy of Music. The standard of jazz bass playing
is getting higher and higher in this country and it is really exciting
to play with these young players who already are beginning to develop
their own sound and concept.
A new cd will be out in 2008 with myself Barry, Jeff
and Dave Green. This will be the second release on my label.
